Humewood Castle, sold last year for €8 (€17m less than in 2006) to an American, is described as ‘Downton-Abbey-style’ which is really a shame since the term ‘Jacobethan’ is so delightful.
My favorite part of the Piazza San Pietro is the weird ramp-like protrusion in the center of the steps where the stone looks melted and oozing, lava-like, down into the square. The whole complex is such a tangle of architects that I have no idea if this was designed by Bernini or Maderno or someone else entirely. In a place where there are several more celebrated stairs (Bernini’s, Giuseppe Momo’s, &c), these are the most public and most overlooked.
